We yearn to become men of integrity — faithful husbands and fathers, powerful leaders, formidable opponents of evil. Christ has set us free for precisely this freedom (Gal. 5:1).

Why, then, do we find ourselves still bound in many domains?

Noble intentions do not make a man any more than passion for sport makes an Olympian. All power is given us by nature and by grace, but it must be forged — the man must train, so that like St. Paul we may say,

‘I do not run aimlessly,
I do not box as one beating the air,
but I discipline my body and master it,
lest after preaching to others
I myself should be disqualified.’
(1 Cor. 9:27-8)
